: : I just wanted to share what I heard on a T.V. show about a woman who has PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). She gained about 50 pounds, was broken out and couldn't get pregnant after trying over a period of years. Several doctors told her to get a hysterectomy but she kept her faith and hope and decided not to. She eventually was given a drug called Metforman (glucopage) which worked like a miracle for her. It lowers insulin, I believe. She also maintains a low-carbohydrate diet. She lost 50 pounds, her skin cleared up and within two months she became pregnant (they'd been trying for 10 years). She did have to take progesterone supplements during the first trimester of her pregnancy because apparently PCOS patients oftentimes do not produce enough progesterone. She and her baby are healthy and happy. (Yay!) Her husband was so supportive and wonderful too and the baby was so cute, and she looked radiant (her skin looked beautiful). It made me cry.

: what is metforman?? is it a prescription and how does it work??
Hi there! Actually that has to do with the weight gain many women experience w/PCOS, it doesn't actually deal with the acne. Not everyone w/PCOS has that problem though - I have it and weigh 108 lbs! I've never had a weight problem - my gyn said that I probably never will, the weight issue and PCOS are separate issues. Seems if you are overweight it can throw your hormones out of wack, but from what I'm told (hope its true!) you won't just gain weight from PCOS. I've had it for years undiagnosed & my main problem has been acne. Spiro is really helping. As for the glucophage unless your problem is weight gain it won't help that. If you do want more info on it though, let me know & I'll look it up for you. PCOS is just really complicated I guess!
