Lisa,
Never give up trying. And remember stressing about acne can make it worse. In females, stress and hormones are directly linked with acne problems.
Educate yourself on acne treatment alternatives. There so much information on the net. This way you can talk to your dermatologist and make informed choices together.
Drink lots of water. I know it sounds trite, but it is TRUE !! Toxins that build up can clog pours causing acne... water dilutes those toxins and washes them out of your system. You are what you eat... another trite but TRUE! Nutritious foods have less toxins. Avoid foods that would dehydrate you (caffeine, alcohol, salt, etc.); these interfere with hydration and water is skin's best friend.
Stay out of the sun! A tan might make your acne look better for a day, but it aggrevates the problem in the long run.
Don't overwash. I use only Neutragena cleanser and Oil of Olay lotion.
For meds, I take a Birth Control Pill called Orth-Novum 1/35 (Ortho-Tricycline is recommended) to control my hormone surges, Minocyline pills (1-2/day) and Clindamycin topical liquid (1-2/day). These three have worked for me but everyone is different. Talk to your dermatologist with information and informed questions. If you are not satisfied then go to a different dermatologist.
To de-stress, I recommend exercise... a relaxing walk, a swim, dancing in front of the mirror, anything you like... besides being "good" for you, exercise relieves stress, aids in circulation (including that hydrating water you're drinking).
Don't be discouraged!!
Good Luck!!
