In Reply to: Considering Accutane..Advice Needed posted by Colleen on February 02, 2000 at 22:19:26:

: Hi there. I am considering accutane after struggling with breakouts for years. I have done quite a bit of research on this medication and am fully aware of its side effects. I know that everyone reacts differently to medication and I am interested in hearing about positive and negative feedback. Some questions I have are: since it gets worse before it gets better, how long is it on average before you see the breakouts subside? What cleansers and moisturizers do you recommend? Most importantly, what type of make-up will camoflauge the break-outs the best? Also, has anyone experienced any restriction to working out (aerobics and weightlifting)?
: Your feedback is appreciated.
: thanks!

Colleen:
I have only been on Accutane for a month now (120 lbs. female on 40 mg/day), so I can't answer some of your questions, but I'll tell you what I can.

As far as the best makeup to camouflage breakouts -- I have tried many products and the best so far is Prescriptives Custom Blend in medium coverage. Its not too heavy, but also not too light. Its oil free and non-comedogenic and they mix it to match your skin perfectly. It is rather expensive, but I think its worth and you don't have to use much. I also found that the people at the Prescriptives counter knew a lot about Accutane and its effects.

About aerobics and weight-lifting: I work out a lot and the only thing I find hindering me since I started taking Accutane is that I'm more tired than usual and I do get body aches from time to time. There are other posts on this board where people complain of backaches, etc. so everyone is different. You may not experience the same things so just go one day at a time.

I'm on a fairly low dose so I don't think my breakouts are quite as harsh as others on a full dose. But I can keep you posted, if you'd like . . .

Hopefully this helps you a little. Just reading posts on this message board definitely makes one feel like they aren't going through this alone! :)

Good luck to you!
