I don't use baking soda to leave on my pimples, but I do use it as an exfoliant. It's probably the best exfoliant (dead skin cell remover) there is. It's cheap and, unlike other exfoliants with uneven granules, gentle on the skin. It also helps to sooth irritated skin.
I squirt some Cetaphil (a gentle liquid soap) in the palm of my hand and add in a tablespoon of baking soda. Then I gently rub this onto my skin that has already had warm water splashed on it. After, I rinse off with warm water.
I do this about once or twice a week (depending on the need). You can make this paste more grainy or less grainy depending on how much baking soda you add. A gentle five-minute scrub should be all you need.
Cheers!
