I too have had really good results with Differin (much better than I did with Retin-A) for cystic acne on my face (also using Monodox pills and benzoyl peroxide gel--which unlike with Retin-A--you can use at the same time as Differin). At first it brought up a lot of pimples--but these did NOT become inflamed/cyst-like mountains as per usual, but were just like hard waxy plugs that came right up to the surface (my facialist would remove them 1x/week and they would heal very quickly). If you have not been totally pleased with Retin-A, it may be worth a try to ask your doc for Differin. My doc told me that often it is not offered because it is more expensive (insurance company pressure to keep costs down). Even if you have to pay out of pocket, a tube lasts for 6-8 months! Good luck!
: I started getting acne on my face and back when I was about 12 years old (I am now 27). While the acne on my face eventually cleared up, my back did not. The acne on my back caused freckle-like (discoloration) scarring. I tried tetracycline antiobiotics and retin-A creams, but both were too harsh. The retin-A was painful. About a year and a half ago, I was prescribed a mild antibiotic and Differin cream. The results have been great. Not only are the breakouts less frequent and severe, the Differin is helping to clear up the scarring! It's been a long process and I would not want to stop taking either for a while yet, but it's been very encouraging. The added bonus has been that the Differin has not irritated my skin at all.
