: : My 3 1/2 yr. old son was diagnosed with "oppositional" ADHD a few months ago. We first tried Ritalin and now Adderall which helps control his hyperactivity and out of control social behavior but doesn`t help with his defiance. He has had tantrums that have lasted 3-4 hrs. screaming with pure rage. This is the hardest to deal with of all his symptoms. He is down to 45 mins. maximum with the screaming. I can`t help but feel that he is going to be scarred emotionally from all the screaming not to mention after the first 10 mins. my husband and I feel like doing something evil to him. I really would like to know if other ADD children have this problem and if there is anything that can help it. We have gone to parenting classes, have very consistent discipline, medication, and a structured day for him (as well as appealing to God for help!). I would really like to talk to a parent who is raising or has raised a child like this..
: My husband and I have gone through EXACTLY what you are going through with our daughter. She used to take the worst tempter tantrums and frequently hurt herself on purpose. I was told, as you were, that she has ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder. We took all the classes, read all the books, ect... There is no magic pill that will make it stop. What we did was take anything dangerous out of daughter's ring- I.e.- glass framed pictures, sharp objects, put gates over the windows, ect.... When she threw her temper tatrums, we picked her up and put her right in her room and left her there until she calmed down. We knew she couldn't hurt herself! However, I must tell you, I don't know if this will happen with your son or not, but my daughter's temper tantrums don't exist now. As she got older, she learned to control her feelings better. PS) She is 5 1/2 now. Good Luck!
Thank you Theresa for responding. It really helps to hear that someone elses child has gone through this and seems to come out of it mentally intact. We also leave him in his room until he stops screaming and it does seem to be getting shorter. He just sounds completely insane when he`s tantruming. Is your daughter on meds? I would love to talk to you. If you would like to get in touch e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
