In Reply to: Re: Son picks at fingers while on Ritalin Is this a side effect? Dr. says "NO" posted by Catherine on January 24, 2000 at 13:25:40:

: : Our son picks at his finger and under the nails while taking the Ritalin. We have watched him while at home an not on the Ritalin an we don't see this, even his teacher has notice this an mention this it to me on several occassions. I ask his Doctor about it but he said that this was not a side effect of Ritalin. Does anyone else see this in there child while they are taking Ritalin? Any help would be greatly appreicated.

I am an adult with ADD (diagnosed at age 52) and I also pick at my fingers and hangnails. I have always picked at myself and in the diagnostic process I was told that I probably had ADD as a child. I recently discussed it with a psychiatrist and we considered the possibility that it might be Obsessive Compulsive behavior and that the Adderall (similar to Ritalin) could be exacerbating the compulsion because it stimulates me. He recommended Prozac at 80mgs/day. It is helping. I also find it helpful to be involved in "active" activities where I am using my hands. So using the computer and playing video games might seem like an attractive alternative. I pick when I'm sitting still (watching TV, especially) I hope this helps. Remember - any small behavior like this will likely be corrected when he decides he no longer wants to do it. JS
