: Hello... First time posting here....was told recently by teacher that my son should go to doctor with checklist for ADD.
: Progress reports show lack of using time wisely or productively....
: He scores well in all areas excluding math...in which he fails to complete tests.
: He is a 3rd grader. In G/T classes and I am wondering why the system is so bent on labeling and medicating kids for being kids....
: He is not the kind of boy that likes baseball, but rather the type to take stuff apart, and put back together. He is on the lazy side, and the school wants to label him as ADD, but I don't understand why?
: Is there anyone that can help me to understand their way of thinking, or how to deal with them on what they want out of my son?
: As far as the checklist, or it seeming to look like he may have ADD, I think that it shows more of a Self-Esteem problem than anything....which I can totally understand...But should you medicate a young person for such a thing?
: Any comments are appreciated
I don't know if your son has ADD or not but I do know that it in no way has to be a bad thing to be diagnosed with it. I was not tested and Diagnosed until I was in my twenties and I wonder sometimes how much better I could have done in shcool if I had been discovered earlier.
I never showed any signs of hyperactivity and if anything could have been labeled a dreamer, but even that I did good at fitting in.I do not know what it would be liek to find out when you are young and how that would shape identity but all that I can think is that more knowledge
is always good in the long run. Do the other senareos work for your son, is there any other credable reason he should have self esteam issues, and is there any reason that he should be lazy as you put it. I would say get him checked out and dont except it as bad news if he is, he is
the same kid as always you would just have a filter by which to understand some of his actions. Good Luck and God Bless
