You describe your son as I would describe my daughter. She is 9 years old, also has always been very active and aggressive since she was a toddler. She is also very intelligent, easily bored, and very strong willed. She also threw the fits you mentioned when she didn't get her way. And, as your son, was also diagnosed with ADHD, and childhood bi-polar at the age of 5. (That was only because I refused to do anything about it prior to that age) We were dead set against having her on Ritalin. We started off with Dexedrine. That didn't seem to help and since Dexidrine is made up of Aderal, we didn't switch to it. She had such horrible side affects that we soon added Depakote to her meds. Then there was a side affect that the doctor thought needed Zoloft. And again we added yet another med. - Risperdal. Now we were up to 4 meds. and I started doing my own research. I started reading words like "life threating" and "fatal to children" and I knew she had to come off all meds.
But now what? I finally gave in to Ritalin. She has been on it for 2 years and it is the best thing I have ever seen. She is ALMOST the sweet and normal little girl we always wanted. We don't have any trouble at school...conduct or academically. As a matter of fact, last year she brought home a plaque for having all A's the entire year! It's been a miracle!!! If I were you, I would do more research on Risperdal. It is not a drug for children. And Ritalin has been proven and tested to be the best medication with the least side affects for ADHD and ADD. My brother-in-law, who just turned 40, took Ritalin when he was a child. Best of luck to you!!!!
