: I have ADHD and have finally "hit the bottom" with Ritalin. The first year, my grades were up and my teachers, parents, and myself were relieved to have found a solution. The second year, I finished college and everyone was commenting on my great work. Little did they know how I took a couple more pills to help me do a little better. Now I am employed and find myself getting to work late in the AM because I did not get enough sleep. I'm too thin, my emotions are a reflection of Ritalin and not me anymore. I finally broke down this weekend- called my parents and said enough is enough. They are happy to know that their sedated child is leaving and the happy one is returning. Ritalin is so addictive because we recieve so much praise for our good work when we are on it, and treated like we are too scattered off of it. Its okay to have ADHD and treat it with something else- I'm looking into a natural alternative. Does anyone know of anything that could help?

I've been doing alot of research re: herbal treatments for ADHD lately, to help my son. I, too, am tired of the side effects of the meds used for ADHD! I did find some herbs, which have improved my son's symptoms, without turning him into a zombie! Avena Sativa (an oat), Valerian Root, Chamomilla, Passiflora, and Coffea Crudum all help with attention span, nervousness, and insomnia. Ignatia helps with anger and mood swings. I started giving my 9 yr old son a combo of these herbs, and I've seen a big difference! He's not as moody, he's calmer, more focused, and able to sleep at night. Most importantly, he has his personality back! You should be able to find these at a health & nutrition store. Any questions, feel free to email me. I'd be interested in hearing how they work for you-or if you find something else that works! Good luck!
