: I have just recently been told that my son who is almost 8 has ADD. We went to the docters and they suggested Adderall, which we started yesterday 1/4 pill and today 1/2 pill. My problem and confusion comes with many unanswered questions..please read my short story and email me with any answers you might have(negative/positive). My son and I just made a huge move to NY from Dallas, a divorce and many miles fro his dad. My son seems to have the "behavior's" associated with ADD. but on the other hand he is on the honor role and loves his schoolwork. I am feeling very guilty, that i just said YES to the medicine without doing more research(which i have done alot). I would just like some feedback..someone out-there I could discuss this with. Am I making the wrong decision??
My first comment would be to ask how did they arrive at the diagnosis of ADD for your son. Was thorough testing done at an appropriate clinic. If he was not thoroughly tested for ADD then I would say no to the medication UNTIL thorough testing is done. If he was tested thoroughly for this at a clinic and your copy of the test results comfirm the diagnosis of ADD then medication may or may not be in order. With a concrete diagnosis of ADD you could try the medication for a bit to see if it helps his ADD and go from there. Counseling is sometimes used in place of medication or with medication depending on the test results as well as your son's symptoms. I hope this helps a little. You can also discuss your fears and concerns with the psychologist who was involved with the testing.
