: My son is 9 years old and is thought to have ADHD. He can't seem to sit still for more than a few minutes at a time. Doesn't sleep at all at night(only about 2 hours a night). Takes him at least 2 hours to finish 10 homework problems. Doesn't listen at home or at school. Unable to ay attention to anything or anyone. He has been this way since birth. He started seeing a doctor who wants him on meds. Not sure what are good ones or bad. Anyone have some thoughts for me?
: I've tried about every herbal and over the counter drugs I can and nothing works. I always hear that he is a boy and suppose to be that way. But I don't buy that. He gets good grades in school thats what I don't seem to understand. Not complaining about the grades but how can someone with ADHD have such good grades.
: Please anyone give me help that might help me better understand this and help him a little better? Is medication the answer and does it work?

Start by taking him to a clinic to be tested for ADHD so that you have a concrete diagnosis to work with. Once he is tested the doctor at the test clinic will talk with you about the results and suggest possible treatment. Sometimes medication is suggested and other times sessions with a therapist are recommended. I have a son on medication for ADD and now have a daughter who has some ADD tendencies but did not test out pure ADD. She will have therapy starting today as her ADD symptoms come from getting over anxious when overstimulated per say. As you can see ADD and ADHD can take on many different forms but only testing can tell you whether you son does or does not have this and what treatment route to try if he does indeed have this. Good Luck and I hope this helps some.
