I just made an appointment for my son's year check-up for being on Adderall. My feelings are mixed about the medication. He was in first grade last school year and did very well. Better than his teachers thought, actually. He excelled at reading, but he had a great teacher who really made him work hard. When he reached and could maintain something at a certain level- she made him bump it up just a bit to keep him focused. He loved science and math. He went to summer school to work on math conceptual things: time, money, measurement, etc. He said he didn't like his teacher because she made him work hard. He needs to work on his social skills. I'm trying to get some sort of behavior management for him as he sometimes does naughty things for attention. He can also be aggressive at times. As far as the adderall goes, I didn't notice much in the way of side effects. I only gave it too him once a day to get him through school, but I might step it up to 2x/day. He gets really cranky after school or is very easily upset. He's not a big eater most of the time, so it didn't really seem to lessen his appetite that much. I just try to give him things that'll benefit him more when he does eat. I'm sorry to be rambling on, but I still believe there's a better way to help kids with any kind of attention-deficit disorder. I mean, it wasn't like night and day when he uses the medication, but it helped him in school. I'm always open to suggestions/ideas/thoughts. Never accept one person's opinion as the gospel- you know your child better than anyone. Try several things until he/she seems happy and achieving some goals.
