My son started 6th grade on Monday. He went 4 whole days without a complaint and said he actually enjoyed his new schedule. Today however, he came home crying. He felt he was already falling behind in his classwork. He told me that he had extra homework because he couldn't keep up during class, he wasn't even sure what the assignment was. I calmed him down and reassured him that all would be ok. I then call his school immediately. I spoke to two of his teachers who informed me that he was doing great. My son certainly didn't feel that way. I made an appointment to speak with all 4 of his teachers, as a study team, to discuss an action plan for the following semester. It was suggested to me that a 504 plan would be very helpful in assisting my son with his work since he didn't qualify for an IEP/SE. I did some research on 504 since I had never heard of it before. I understand that it is a disability act but I don't understand how the 504 plan could help my son. Is there anyone with a child currently involved with 504, or does anyone have knowledge about it? I really need help. I want my son's 6th grade experience to be more pleasant than what his 5th grade was.
