: My son is in 1st grade at a Catholic school. He was diagnosed with ADD in April of this year. His kindergarten teacher noticed improvements immediately when he was put on Adderall. Now that he's in 1st grade, the Adderall wasn't working. We have changed him to Ritalin but she says that isn't making a difference. I have an appointment to go back to his doctor but they can't see him until December. When I met with his teacher, she said that she had been teaching for 14 years and never had a child with ADD. I believe this because in the "olden days" the kids with ADD were weeded out. Anyway, She has send another note home saying she wants to meet with me again regarding my son's progress. I am getting a little frustrated with her. I'm sure I already know some of the things he is doing and I want to tell her to educate herself about ADD. How do I go about doing that? How do I get her to understand my son. In looking at his weekly homework, I don't think he's doing that bad and I see some improvement but she doesn't. Can anyone give me any suggestions? I am frustrated because the next doctor's appointment is so far away and I don't know what to tell his teacher. Thanks, Lisa B.

Lisa,

I am an ADHD adult. I am also a special education teacher. I am thirty-nine years old, and was diagnosed as hyperactive in the 1960s before the term ADHD was in use. Very few children were diagnosed as hyperactive then.

I think that ADHD may be over diagnosed in elementary school children now. There are other disabilities that can look like ADHD. I am thinking of juvenile mania, which is not as widely known.
