: I am searching for information regarding the
: relationship between ADD and addiction....My brother
: was recently diagnosed with ADD and also struggles
: with addiction....He is now taking Wellbutrin and
: we have seen amazing results from just two weeks of
: taking this medication while in rehab...If anyone
: has any information or web sites please share them
: with me.
I personally have fournd that several of my ADD freinds and acquaintances(sp?) suffer from addiction as well. My shrink, whom I trust absolutely, told me it is not uncommon for a ADDer to have addictions. These addictions appear to be driven by the need to "self medicate", or regulate the ADD "storm" inside of our heads. We are constantly bombarded with stimuli, as we see, and hear EVERYTHING. For me alcohol worked wonderfully well, for a while. But because the effect of alcohol are detremental to my physical and mental well-being I constantly had to increase my dose of "medication" to achieve the "normal" feeling that I craved. And that, boys and girls, is the healthy start to an addiction.
I tried Wellbutrin, as well, and found that it COMPLETELY removed my craving for alcohol.
Your brother MUST find a support group. E.g. the group shall A lways remain A nonymous, or
N ever be anything but A nonymous. Get it? It helped me, and I found a whole bunch of people that were EXACTLY like I was, and they could really understand my thought processes.
Your brother must becareful of the medications they give to him because most of the ADD meds tend to be of the same variety as "speed" and methamphetamine. He may want to chose to stay with Wellbutrin, or another SSRI (Selective Seratonin Re-uptake Inhibitor. If you look on the WEB you will find ample information regarding ADD, addiction, support groups, and medications used to treat these "disorders". Remember, never take anything on the Web to be absolutely true, even my advice. The stuff I wrote about helped ME. It might not work for everyone. Good luck!!:)
