My son also refused to take the medication last year (at age 14), after having his first really successful school year the previous year (on medication). It was tough. When he became unable to manage his schoolwork, I stepped in and got his assignments and made sure he had the necessary books, etc. It embarrassed him terribly. I stayed up many nights keeping him on track with homework. He passed 8th grade by 2 points. (Yet he tests at college level.)
He learned a hard lesson, and I don't believe we'll have that problem again. This year he's off to a good start...not a single homework miss in the first quarter of the year. And I have not had to be involved.
The school nurse told me that she could have gotten him to take his medication last year. But I'm glad, if it had to happen, that he got to experience the consequences of his decision. Nearly failing 8th grade really woke him up.
