I don't have any children of my own, but I might have a suggestion for you. I am an adult with ADD,
when I was in grade school my parents enrolled me in a special school for a few years. There the teachers
had much smaller classes than in the typical public school classroom, with a lot of one on one instruction.
The school also structured the classroom enviroment to help the children shut out distactions and focus
on their classwork. As for me, I now go the other way, I can focus to the point of exclusing everything else.
I stayed there until the third or fourth grade, and though ADD continued to make school a nightmare for
me later, I was at least able to function in the classroom. Perhaps your son might benefit from this approach.
If you can afford a private school, that might be the answer for you, if you cannot perhaps home schooling
is the only hope short of fighting the school system tooth and nail. Personally I am totally opposed to schools
dictating forcing kids to take drugs. I hope you stand up to the school system and prevent them from using
drugs like Ritalin as a first, instead of a last resort. These are controlled substances, they can have bad side
effects on some people who take them, and many kids abuse Ritalin like cocaine, crack or marijuana.
That is not to say they should never be used, but for many the side effects and cost of the medications aren't
worth the benefits if any. It's a credit to you that you're seeking all options to help your son. The school systems
as far as I am concerned couldn't care less about the welfare of the kids in their care. I wish the best of luck to you both.
