: I am a recent college graduate. My college years were plagued by drug/alcohol problems. I was addicted to heroin and I used alcohol to help me get off heroin. Needless to say, that wasn't the best way to deal with the problem, and things got worse. I entered an outpatient program to deal with those issues. The program was highly successful. I can now say that heroin and alcohol are no longer a part of my life, and I am successfully able to not use those substances. It has been nearly 2.5 years since my last heroin use and about 7 months since my last drink.

: However, I am not substance free. I smoke pot. I have used it throughout college, and now I smoke about 3 times a week, when I am not in school. I chose not to mix marijuana smoking during the school year, because I notice that my memory is affected a little bit, and I do not want my grades to suffer. As it is currently the summer, and I am not in classes, I have been smoking on occassion.

: I am living in my parents house for the summer, as I will be attending graduate school in the fall. Problems arose recently, when I learned that my father had entered my room while I was at work, and essentially thoroughly searched the room, and he happened to find my stash. I had kept a film container about half full of pot in my pants pocket, and he found it. I was confronted with it, and my parents now feel I should enter rehab and not enter grad school in the fall.

: Clearly, my history is being taken into account, but I know that my pot use is not problematic the way my heroin/alcohol use was. I am able to not smoke when I want, I have not experienced any negative consequeces (other than this recent experience), and I know once grad school starts, I will not be smoking. Essentially, I am able to turn it off and on when I want, unlike my former alcohol/heroin use.

: First I am incensed that at 22 years old, I cannot expect any privacy. However, I am more worried about being sent back to rehab for marijuana addiction, instead of going ahead with my future. Can anyone offer any advice to me in this situation? Are my parents correct in their actions? I don't believe so, but I would like an objective opinion. Thank you. -Li

Okay,
You said that you went to rehab? Did you pay attention in rehab. A drug is a drug is a drug is a drug. Your parents probably snooped because your drug addictive behaviors were surfacing again. Fear? You sound like a bright person and you probably should not use any mind altering chemical because when you get high it releases endorphines in the brain and people like this feeling and addicts tend to really like it so they get weaker and weaker and there recovery gets harder and harder. I would hit a couple MA meeting and abstane from alcohol and other drugs once and for all. You will be happier. You have my guarantee.
