: : Does anyone ever wake up in the middle of the night and start eating without even realizing it? What do
: : you do when you are half asleep and then wake up in the kitchen, only to realize that you have just eaten
: : several cookies or whatever?? If it's a habit, how can you break it?
: Dear Amber, I have suffered from the same thing. In fact I almost chocked a few times, because I was more asleep than awake while I was eating. I can't say I am over it, but I can tell you that it hasn't happened in a while. The first thing I did was eliminate any and all food from my bedroom. Even a little cookie. Nothing near by! When I found myself eating in my sleep I did anything it took to wake myself up fully. This was hard, but it might save your life. Make yourself wake up.....do something annoying.....or something that makes you cold or uncomfortable. I am sure for thousands of dollars we could get a shrink to tell us that we are feeding an lonely empty part of ourselves. Fine I accept that might be part of why......however, maybe a little snack before going to bed would curb your urge to eat. I haven't heard of many people like us who have done this, but I am certain we are not the only two on earth. Do the obvious and see what new stresses have been added to you life recently. Do not take sleeping meds. they could be dangerous. Unless of course your Doctor has prescribed them, if he has, you need to tell him what is happening to you. If he can't help, keep looking for someone who will. I think I just got into a habit. But there were other factors involved with my night time habit of eating in my sleep. Well good luck. And let us know what you find out.

I too eat at night and have almost choked myself. It is to the point where in the morning I almost have diarhea. I thought it was because I smoked pot at night. Actually it does subside somewhat when I do not smoke, but if I haven't smoked for a week I just start getting up and eating anyway. I am going to try the making yourself wake up thing. I did the same with cigarettes for a while until found one burnt through the carpet next to my chair one morning. I have two kids. Please no comments on the pot smoking which I am trying to quit. The eating thing is driving me crazy. I am a 41 year old married male.
