Abuse and addiction is possible with Xanax. However it is generally accepted as safe for most people. You can overdose on Xanax but not on the amount you are taking. You would have to take very many to overdose. The maximum dose is stated at 4mg each day in divided doses for Anxiety and Tension. Panic attacks are a form of Anxiety Reacton. The people I know that have experienced Panic Attacks find that a few months of therapy, drug and some kind of counseling, find there attacks diminish and then end. This is not always be the case for everyone.
You can suffer withdrawl symptoms with long term use. Your Dr. will probably cut your dosage down gradually when she/he feels it is safe.
