In Reply to: Wheat allergy vs. celiac disease posted by chris on January 23, 2000 at 21:05:07:

: Hi...
: This is a very very very dumb question, but....

: If someone is allergic to wheat, does that person neccessarily have celiac disease? I believe I am allergic to wheat, but I am very tall (no stunted growth), rarely have diarrhea, and have been experiencing weight GAIN rather than loss.

: It's a simple simple question but no one seems to have the answer for me.

: Thanks in advance

Wheat allergy and Celiac disease are two seperate but correlating issues. Celiac disease is a malabsorption disease (meaning that you do not retain any nutrient value of your food). My step-mother was stricken with it in her 40's. My best guess, from your description is that you do not have celiac, however it is something that you could don't heed your body. Wheat intolerance/allergy is a serious issue. Talk to your doctor and if you see signs of a problem or start to feel there is something wrong INSIST on being tested for celiac.

Celiac is serious, and deadly if you don't get proper medical treatment.
