When I was 21 years old I started breaking out in hives (head to toe) about once or twice a year. The hives last 5 to 6 days then disappear for 6 to 12 months. I am now 34 years old and there has been no significant deviation from this pattern except that the hives have grown steadily worse. A dose pack helps alot (methylprednisolone) but without it on a bad day I need to take around 450 to 500 mg of benedryl just to keep the hives at a tolerable level. Non-drowsey antihistimines don't help. I have kept a careful record of each outbreak noting foods, activities, locations, and seasons when the hives start and have never found a common factor. I have noticed that several times the hives started within a day or two of beginning an exercise routine but I don't break out every time I exercise. One more clue, and I don't know if this is common or not, my hives disappear when I sleep. Any insights? Anyone in a similar situation?
