For many years now I have contracted what seemed to be a nasty head cold, always during the winter when the central heating system was being used. Whenever the symptons were really bad I went to my doctor and was invariably prescribed a decongestant and an antibiotic. However, last year I went to a walk-in clinic and the young doctor there took the time to talk to me about my symptons. He said that the symptons I described could easily be due to an allergy rather than a virus infection. He suggested that next fall I begin taking Benadryl on a daily basis as soon as we started using central heat.
Last October I began taking one 25 mg generic equivalent benedryl each morning. This is the first time I can recall not having my annual winter "head cold". In addition I do not have the other problems that plagued me during the winter...post nasal drip, itchy eyes and stuffy nose. I think the young doc was correct.
Hope this info may be of help to others with similar symptons.
