: We got a new golden retriever puppy a week ago. My 20 month old daughter has eczema in the typical spots - behind the knees, wrists and ankles. Since we brought the dog home she has been itchy all over!!! And when she has really been rolling around with him her eyes get red and her face gets blotchy. What can I do!!?? She was around other goldens before with no reaction and so this a surprise to us. We have 2 other children that would be CRUSHED if we had to give the pup up. We have hardwood floors and we are pretty clean people but it is unrealistic to keep them apart (they love each other). Is there any products that are safe? Also, I have heard that she may become immuned eventually. Anyone have any ideas about that? My main concern is that because it is related to eczema, that she will develop asthma. Anyone have any experience with that. So far the reaction is strictly itchy skin but I am watching her closely!!

: Help!! I love my puppy!!

I feel for you. I'm not sure I could give up my golden either. Try bathing your dog often (weekly?) with a mild shampoo (your vet can suggest one for frequent bathing - go with his suggestion even though it may be expensive to keep your pups skin healthy). Make sure to rinse him thoroughly each time, since shampoo residue can irritate his skin. You might need to use a conditioner so his coat doesn't get dried out. Maybe your daughter isn't allergic to your dog, but to what he brings in from outside on his coat.
Good luck!
