I don't use these kind of carpet refreshers since being diagnosed with allergies and asthma to other things... I'm too paranoid of a bad reaction.
You say you've used them before without any problems... maybe an ingredient has been added or changed out for another that is giving him a reaction. Hoping your son improves quickly.
