: Whenever I drink alcohol,(particularly beer) I turn a splotchy red on my neck and chest. I also become stuffed up, like you would if you were somewhere with alot of pollen. Is this an allergy of some sort or am I the only one with this problem?? Any help you could offer would be appreciated. Thanks, Roy

I rarely drink more than one beer now; when I do I experience a swelling around/in the soft tissue surrounding my eyes. This was diagnosed (1) as an allergy to sulfer, then (2) as a histamine hypersensitivity, then, most recently, as (3) an enzyme deficiency. The enzyme deficiency disallows the break down of the alcohol in the blood system, which the body then reacts adversely to. My research identifies the enzyme as "alcohol dehydrogenase" and, to date, there is little that one can do about the condition.
