In Reply to: Counter Allegra and prescribe Allegra. What's the differnce! Please help I need help with allergy medication!!!!! posted by Brooks (18 years old) on January 02, 2000 at 11:29:00:

: Hello all and thanks for reading...

: I have allergies year long. I will be getting allergy shots in February and I wanted to know the difference between Allegra on the shelve and Allegra that the doctor must prescribe to you. Is there any other medication for allergiest that the doctor has to precribe to you? It's because it get's to be so expensive if you start to buy all the allergy stuff not prescribe by your doctor. When it's prescribe by the doctor it's all covered by the inssurance company! Please help...I'm going to see the doctor next week! Thanks again...

To the best of my knowledge Allegra is only available by prescription yet at this point. Are you certain the over the counter medication is spelled the same?? Your allergist is the one who can best help you decide what treatment options might work for you. People with true severe allergies such as you seem to have generally are not helped adequatly by over the counter medications. Some do find relief with natural supplements etc. but that is another whole subject. Stick with the allergist for now and see what he has to offer then take things from there. Good Luck.
