: Is there a such thing as being allergic to the cold? If so, I am. This started about a year ago when I got really cold, I broke out with hives. If I go out for a walk and a part of my body becomes really cold, I'll start to get really itchy and when I go inside, I am broken out in hives. Yesterday I was outside for about 15 minutes and when I went inside the hives were all over my neck, legs and they started on my face. Has anyone ever heard of this?

A few years ago I started getting itchy toes in the winter. A dermatologist confirmed I was getting hives. The only suggested treatment was antihistamines. Taking a Benadryl once a day was enough for me. I have since read that there is a specific prescription antihistamine which is supposed to be more effective for "cold" hives. I've also gotten hives all over from swimming in cold lakes. I haven't had any hives so far this winter (Iowa) but I believe I am less sensitive now than I used to be. My sensitivity increased with pregnancy and I even had some food allergies which have now gone away. Hives should always be taken seriously, please see a doctor.
