Do they have dementia or Alzheimer's? Are they on medication? My mom is elderly and has dementia and is on medication. The problem is that sometimes medication can decrease the appetite and we had to MAKE SURE she got into the habit of eating even if she didn't want to. All she wanted to eat was candy and desserts (a lot of old people have a sweet tooth). We especially made sure she ate a sufficient amount of protein and this really helped her brain function better and she was more coherent and able to understand things better.
