: I've been anemic for several years and tried many forms of iron (tablets, liquid, iron sulfate, iron gluconate, veggie iron supplements). When I take the iron, I break out in hives. How can I be allergic to iron? I've considered injections, but am concerned I'll have an allergic reaction. I know all the foods that have iron, and try to supplement my diet with them. I know that vitamin C increases iron absorption. But it's discouraging to have a Hgb of around 8 and be allergic to iron...any ideas?
Nothing I say should be a substitute for advice from your doctor. If your hemoglobin is around 8.0 and you cant take most forms of iron, I would suggest you see a blood specialist (a hemotologist). This drastic of case of anemia can cause many problems like severe tiredness, severe weakness and shortness of breath. I can get you info on foods high in iron but I really think you need to see a specialist.
