: I'm a college student just diagnosed with iron-deficient anemia. My hemoglobin level is at 10.6 and my ferritin level is 1. i have seen two doctors now and all that has been done is iron supplements. My diet has always been healthy with red meat and lots of green vegetables. One doctor has said that my ferritin level is the lowest he has ever seen and is doubtful that my diet has caused this problem, no occult blood has been found in my stool and I have light, regular menstual periods. If anyone can help me with some info I would be much abliged. Should I see a hematologist?

I wasn't able to finish my first year of University due to iron deficiency anemia. After test results showed that I was low in iron I was put on iron supplements for 3 months but without much improvement. So they ran a test to see if the mucous in my intestines had enough of the enzymes necessary to process iron. Without these enzymes you're body can't utilize the iron your body is taking in. I was prescribed Ferric Dulcate, and my health has improved dramatically. If you feel that something is still wrong then I would suggest going to see a haematologist, trust your instincts.
