: My husband was diagnosed with pernicious anemia about a year ago. His Doctor says there is no need to retest his B-12 levels since the shots he gets every 3 weeks ensure that his B12 level stays normal. Should he be checking more often? My husband says he can tell when he needs a shot, the Doctor disagrees. Anyone out there with a similar experience?
Anything I say should not substitute for advice from your doctor. You always have the right to get a second opinion on your healthcare. If your husband has been given the correct diagnosis (which doctors usually study before giving the diagnosis), these injections will clear the problem completely. The problem with not being able to absorb B12 from the stomach is that the injections go on for years and years. It used to come as a red solution with the brand name "cyanocobalamin" on it.
