Hi Bonnie, I take it you are somewhat new to arthritis. I have had bad RA for about17-18 years. The first thing I used was the gold injections. They worked great for many many years. Yes I had to have blood and urine tests every so often. It's policy to have it done to keep tabs on liver function and to check for blood in the urine. I never had a problem with either. Gold after sometime can loose its effectiveness. Maybe ten years if your lucky. I am now on Methotrexate, a fairly strong drug that can be taken the rest of your life. Every six weeks I have blood drawn to check on liver function. Bonnie, don't be discouraged by possible liver side effects. They effect probably less than 5 percent of the population. But, I am just guessing on this. Your Doctor could tell you more about it. RA can really screw up your life and deform your joints unless treated properly and at an early age. There are other medications out there and I bet all of them have some possible side effects. Unless you want to try to go all-natural, but I would be skeptical somewhat of them. Write back if you like. I hope I helped you a little with this.
