Hi John, I have had bad RA for about 16-17 years now. When it first set in, it seemed to have started in one of my shoulders.(it was like my shoulder joint would move in and out of socket) Kind of scary because I didn't know what the heck was going on, couldn't raise my arm above my head. Then about two days later it went into my hip socket about the same time my shoulder cleared up. Then back to my other shoulder and then back to my other hip. But only one joint at a time( very strange isn't it?)I recommend for your friend to go to an M.D.,P.A. arthritis & rheumatic specialist only, not a general practicioner. He will do tests and put him on the best thing to get started on. I started on what they call gold shots, given by injection into the hip. After(I guessing now because it's been so long since I had gold injections) about two months or maybe less he should start noticing a difference. Sometimes the gold injections will not work as good later in the treatments. Maybe ten years if your lucky. But when they worked for me, it was like I was cured. I am now on methotrexate, and just like the gold injections, you have to have periodic blood tests to check your liver function. Also on the gold, you have to have urine samples done too. John through the years I have slowly worsened. I have just recently had surgery on my left foot. My right foot is next, then later in the future both hands will probably have to be done. I can still use both hands fairly well, but I don't know what the future holds for me. I guess sometimes you just can't beat the system, if you know what I mean. Treatments are continually getting better these days and your friend better not wait too long to have it checked out by a professional rheumatologist. John diet may help alot but don't just rely on that. I wish your friend luck and hope you can keep in touch to let me know what he decides to do next. Kevin B.
