In Reply to: Is it lupus or arthritis? posted by Jeff Bartram on November 19, 1999 at 22:49:04:

: A couple of years ago...after suffering for months with severe joint pain and stiffness that nearly cost me my job,I decided to go to my family doctor to find out what the problem was.
: Blood tests revealed that my ANA level was very high and was a strong indicator of lupus according to my Dr.
: I was scared to say the least so I went to a Rheumatologist and he told me that lupus could not be diagnosed by only a blood test, and that other criteria had to be made in order to do so.
: According to the rheumatologist I didn't meet enough criteria..so he calls my condition arthritis. Has anyone else been in a similar situation where you felt like your diagnosis was just guesswork?

I too have joint pain and have been told my ANA is high. It is positive 320. My rheumatologist says that since i have no other criteria i have fibromyalgia. I feel as if they just dont know for sure what i have. That was three years ago. My ANA is still positive, and i still have joint pain, although no swelling. I have been told that blood work for other Lupus anti-bodies can change day to day so I am going to be retested. Good luck to you.
