NIH is presently doing research on a thousand people using glucosamine and chondroiten,alone and together. They haven't posted any results yet that I know of and I keep checking often.
I have been taking glucosamine for over a year after reading about it in "Runners World" magazine with the suggestion that we "older" runners should take it to protect our joints. It didn't save mine as my running was stopped by an arthritic hip but it may have extended the time I was able to run, who knows?
I still take glucosamine/chondroiten, in fact I've doubled up on the dosage from 1500 to 3000 mg a day. I don't know if it will help any more than the extra vitamin C,D, or E that I take. I know I'm better now than I was 2 months ago, but it may also be the flaxseed oil, the fish oil, the ginger, the B6 tablets, the acupuncture, the chiropractor, my Priest's healing ceremony or the Swedish therapist at the Tiki Tiki. What ever it is will take me a while to figure out and I'm afraid to stop any of it for fear the worst pain will return.
Anyway after saying all that, Glucosamine has the most positive claims and very little bad side effects of any of the supplements that I've read about. If I read about anything better, you can bet I will try that too. Good luck,,Gramps
