: Has anyone on the board had hand surgery because of arthritis? My middle finger is twisting, looking deformed, and is very painful. My doctor has advised surgery to correct this and I would like to talk with someone who has had this done before making a decision. Any input will be sincerely appreciated.
I had surgery on my middle finger of my writing hand--the doctor inserted a screw because the finger was twisting and badly bent (what I have resembles Reiter's Syndrome but in my case has affected the ligaments in my hands). I'd say thta the surgery was successful. I can now write without pain though there's some adjustment to having an unjointed finger in that occasionally I bang into things. I have another finger that could use the same surgery though basically it would be cosmetic and I'm not particularly concerned with that--so I guess what I'd say is that if the issue is function the surgery can be useful.
