Different degrees of Asthma?

I've suffered with wheezing, coughing and very occasional shortness of breath over the last few years (I also have allergies which are manageable without medication) but I've been checked (spirometer) three times by two different doctors and each time they are not able to detect "asthma". I am not using any meds since usually I'm able to function just fine. I do have an inhaler which I've only needed to use a few times.
The doctor does not really consider me asthmatic so I'm wondering, are there different degrees of asthma? Is it possible that my asthma will worsen with age? How bad does it have to be to register on the spirometer?
Any information about this would be appreciated.
