What looks and sounds like asthma, may be acid reflux disease is disguise. This is a long note I would
have love to have learned about over a year ago. My son, 17 mo, has had wheezing (crackling) constantly
and intermitent coughing since about 2 mo. He was put on ALbuterol nebulizer till first hospital trip at 8
mo for uncontrollable coughing and could NOT stop. Pediapred, steroid, was all that could stop it. We
have had 6 more of those episodes in 9 mo. We have seen 2 pediatric pulmonologists and 3 pediatricians.
He was put on Flovent and Serovent inhalers, Claritin and Nasonex and Albuterol, Xoponex, and Atrovent,
all at various times every 4 hrs. Nothing made the wheezing stop at all and the coughing completely stop.
He was tested for Cystic Fibrosis (neg), a vascular ring(neg) and reflux with a barium swallow (NEG).
After another infection of pneumonia, FINALLY, he had a double sensor (larynx and esophagus) pH
probe. Guess what!! He has severe REFLUX!!! After all this time! He is silently refluxing.... no spitting up or
throwing up or refusing food, then aspirating it into his lungs. He has been on Zantac for about 2 weeks
and there is a huge difference... even in his behavior! No more whining and fussy and cranky for NO
reason all day long!! He cried alot as a baby and still did.... amazing... if we had that kind of heartburn,
we'd be crying too!! We are still on asthma meds for now and will try to get off within a few weeks.
Hopefully no permenant lung damage has occured. He still has a little coughing when he eats or drinks,
but NO wheezing. If anyone has similar problems, I'd love to talk. themareks@home.com I hope someone
like me might read this and get some answers sooner than later.
Amy (Bobby III, 17mo)
