: Hi,
: My b/f has mild asthma, and takes a medication call Becatide. I have looked for info on it on web sites, but found none. My b/f lives in Australia, and I live in hte states. Could it be listed under a different name here? Also, does anyone know any side effects this medication may have? I am just curious, and wanting to help out my b/f, so I am getting educated. Thanks.

I have just searched for asthma +becotide and found in the UK the only references are in investors reports showing that the sales of the drug by Glaxo Wellcome have decreased by 30% in the UK, I don't know why this is. My children have both been described Becatide and we have been assured that there are no side effects at the low doses prescribed ... but at higher doses it can affect growth so children should be carefully monitored on it. But this does not really happen. Them medical people say it is totally safe. I asked my child's consultant paediatrician about it this morning and she said that it was safe at low doses. I did ask her if there where people around who had been on it all their lives and where now in their 60's, she was not forthcoming. It is a steroid, and although it mimics a naturally occuring one I am not sure about it. But, it does reduce the severity of asthma attacks and as she says, asthma can kill. But if your boyfriend's attacks are infrequent he may want to use just the Ventolin reliever as required. But if he does get ill he will be given oral steroids anyway which they do recognise as having side-effects - e.g. they affect the immune syste.
