She is 5, and just got potty trained, except at night and the occasional accident. She was holding it for up to 9 hours and I was getting SO frustrated after hours and days sitting on the bathroom floor, waiting. I found out, quite by accident, that she wouldn't go unless I left the room. Who would have figured? Also, the BIG and VERY IMPORTANT first step is to get him out of those pull-ups and into undies. You may be doing a lot of laundry for a couple of weeks, but it's the only way. Once we decided we we going for it, we used underwear only, except at night, and went into the bathroom every 2 hours just for 5-10 minutes. We found that spending hours was counter-productive and just made her more frustrated. I would then sneak into the hallway and listen for the tinkle. Gradually, over 2-3 weeks, she got it. Just have patience and give up 2-3 weeks of your life solely for this - it'll work like a charm. Also, gave a GREAT treat for his successes that he doesn't get any other time. Good luck!
