: : Hi
: : I was wondering if anyone thought that their child maybe dyslexic as well as autistic and what information anyone has on any connection between the two disorders.
: : Thankyou
: : Sarah
: I've a colleague who's child has been dx'd as dyslexic.
: but in my opinion he has many autistic tendancies.......probably he has aspergers to boot.
: Autistic Spectrum Disorders do have many titles.
: Some are often referred to as "associated" or "related" (to autism ) disorders.
: bottom line-my opinion- autism is as any dis-ease it can range from very mild cases to
: very severe. Autism is Autism is Autism-no matter what the title.
: There are numerous case of mis-diagnosis, whereby the child has gone for many years-
: maybe to their teens and beyond to adulthood, before a true diagnosiof a specific ASD has
: been made. Donna Williams (UK Author) is a classic example she was dx'd schitsophrenic.
: prior to the true dx of Aspergers in her twenties.....
: sad, but very, very true for so many ASD individuals........
: Best wishes,
I agree with your "Autism is autism is autism" - but I know children with high functioning autism who have read since 2 years (but social skills aren't great) and others (like my boy) who is quite social (but in a weird way) but has great trouble reading and writing - they all have the diagnosis of autism but there appears to be two distinct groups.
I had dyslexia as a child and remember the world being mixed up until I was about 11 years. It was not just numbers and letters it was communication as well. Obviously it was not to the extent of my son but I feel his problems are some what connected to mine.
