Too often people with limited training and questionable experience will make judgement calls they really shouldn't make. I have an autistic son, and have done a bit of research over the last year, but I certainly wouldn't call myself qualified to make this diagnosis. Many people (doctors, school personel, etc.) have far less background than I do, and yet they will not hesitate to make this call.

Nearly all large universities and most Children's Hospitals will have people on staff who are capable to make this dx. Your HMO will pay for this (less your copay) with a proper referal from your pediatrician. You wouldn't take your car to a plumber or have your baby sitter do your taxes. Take your child to someone with a proper degree and background experience to get a credible dx.

Good luck to you.
