: While Jacob was in the hospital they told me that it does'nt matter what our income is ,,,,, He should receive the full amount of SSI because of his disability.. He has'nt gotten a check in a year now because of our income ....... Does anyone know anything about this .. Thank you if so,, DeAnna slarry803@aol.com

My grandson, Nathan (5) has been on SSI for almost 2 years. SSI is funded through the Federal Social Security Act. It is based on income...butI believe the income now is capped at $60,000 for a couple. Nathan qualifies because his mom is a single parent and has a rather low income. Also, neither you or the child can have assets over $2000. For my daughter & Nathan that means $4000. They watch this pretty close....my husband & I had been buying "Education Bonds" for Nathan and they must be in the name of the parent in order to qualify as tax exempt for education. My daughter got a call from Social Security stating that they showed $XXXX in savings bonds registered in her name. She did not even have the bonds, we have them, and she didn't even know how many we had, etc. None of that mattered to Social Security, we had to have the bonds reissued in our names so the assets would not count against Nathan's SSI. One month Julie got several hours of overtime and just that increase in her income reduced Nathan's SSI check about 2 months later. It wouldn't pay for Julie to look for a higher paying job because it would just reduce Nathan's SSI so she wouldn't gain a thing. I don't know how Julie would manage without Nathan's monthly check, so she tries to keep good records of anything and everything. Hope this helps you a bit. Sue
