A qualified and experienced pediatric developmental psyche would prob. not give a firm dx at 2, but would possibly give you a "not autistic" dx if that were the case.

As far as what to look for, does your child do compulsive and ritualistic things, over and over, going back to them even if you try to redirect him? (like line up pencils, stack or line up the vcr tapes, empty out the cupboard and line up all the cans, etc,)
Does your child avoid interaction with you, shunning contact like hugs, avoid eye contact, refuse to look at you when you speak to him, etc?
Does your child repeat odd noises over and over, or repeat one word or syllable, and is he failing to pick up other words?
Is he just as content to play by himself as interact with others, children included?

None of these are perfect indicators; your child may do some or all and not be autistic, or he MAY be autistic and not display these behaviors. But many autistic children will share these behaviors, and most less qualified professionals (such as are commonly found in the grist mills we call the public school system) will use checklists similar to these to make their dx.

Good luck to you!
