In Reply to: Problem:autistic son with severe feeding problems, ABA program, non-food reinforcement ideas??? posted by berry picker on August 11, 2000 at 05:41:46:

: Our son has had severe feeding problem since well before we new he was autistic. Now we know the root of the feeding problem (ultimate picky eater), but it we are going to be starting an ABA program soon and need more ideas for reinforcements. Also, we would like to know we are not alone with this dilemma. I am new to this site, I wish I found it months ago!!! Everyone is so supportive. We live in a very rural area of Alaska and have had support, but not able to talk to others in the same boat. Also, is there a message board just for ABA discussion?? I thank you for any assistance!!

Try other reinforcement ideas instead of food. We used hand puppets, party favors that would make noise, hand stamps and even a gameboy. Everything not edible was given to him for a limited time starting with a few seconds to longer for better response. This worked well and now our non verbal son is verbal and enrolled in mainstream classes.
Hope this helps.
