I believe the controversy is over the cumulative effects of mercury-based preservatives, delivered via several shots, not just one.
Related controversies are over combining vaccines, or delivering them at a time when a child may have a temporarily weakened immune system.
Still another controversy concerns precipitating autoimmune disease by inadvertently training the body to attack a protein that is similar to one of the body's own proteins. The protein comes from some component of the vaccine being administered.
