Thimerasol, a preservative used in multijab vaccine lots is no longer used in the HiB vaccine, as of sometime in late '98 or early '99. I do not know what they replaced it with. There also is a very likely chance that lots of HiB that contain Thimerasol will still be in use for several years to come (barring a recall).
What the original poster was refering to as far as the amount of mercury (24.7% of the vaccine by weight) was as follows.
According to both the FDA and the CDC, the amount of mercury in a shot of HiB was within the tolerated range according to their arbitrary decision. It did, however, happen to be 400% of the tolerable exposure level according to the EPA. This translates effectively into we can shut down the plant where your husband works (a grown person with a fully developed central nervous system) if he is exposed to one fourth of the mercury we think it is ok to shoot into your newborn baby (whose central nervous system is still several years from finishing its developement) in our efforts to protect them from a disease they are not very likely to catch.
Mercury is very neuro toxic (among other problems it can cause) and once in, stays in the vital organs for an extremely long time, possibly for life. Some will say that no, it is exceted from the body, but they have no proof to support this, as mercury does not remain free in the blood where it could be tested, but goes into storage rather quickly. Considering the explosive growth of LD's during the 80's and 90's (when Thimerasol was used, and vaccinations were expanded), and considering the known toxic effects of mercury upon the central nervous system, I think it is safe to say, that while the final judgement over mercury and vaccines role in this growth is not yet determined, there is more than enough circumstancial evidence to warrant a very close look into this problem.
Couple that with the fact that the regualtions concerning this are made be people who have not done adequate testing, and have personal financial stakes in the very drug companies they are regulating, and I thik you can see that this is a very serious problem.
