In Reply to: I would love to hear from someone who's child was diagnosed with Autism and had Lyme Disease also. posted by Nancy on October 02, 2000 at 10:02:43:
: I've written before about not being able to accept the Autism diagnosis. The reason being is that
: my daughter totally changed after her bout with Lyme Disease. Only 2 months after she ended
: her treatment she was diagnosed as a high functioning Autistic (but not Asperger due to her
: speech delay). I now accept that she is Autistic regardless of what I think "caused" it and I'm
: considering putting her on the GFCF diet. We're also trying to get her into the early intervention
: program in our school system. Unfortunately they say the evaluation could take up to 90 Days!
: I thought the speech and Neurological evaluation she had before would have been enough to get
: her right in. I still want to check into the Lyme possibility and would like to hear from anyone
: who's child who is in a similar situation. There was a person who posted a message
: (on a different message board) who's son had Lyme and was autistic. I tried his e-mail but it
: came back as user unknown.
: I just wanted to say I think these boards are wonderful and I've learned so much from others.
: I don't know what I would have done without them!
Your school system should accept the speech evaluation that was already done. Also you may be able to do an occupational therapy evaluation through a hospital or other source. My insurance company paid for the evaluations, but not the private therapy that we have. I was fortunate that the school system was able to get info from these evaluations so we were able to get him assigned to a preschool within 2 months of his diagnosis.
The schools generally don't bend over backwards to help anyone. These services cost money and sometimes you have to get a little pushy to get the ball rolling. God bless.
